Material Database for Design and Calculation of Components made from Natural Fiber Reinforced Materials.
Natural fibers from domestic plants such as Flax and Hemp are increasingly used for the reinforcement of materials and in some cases have already replaced the classic reinforcement fibers such as glass.
The existing applications for natural fiber reinforcements are restricted to applications with low loads, such as panels or automotive roof linings. Until today higher loaded structural components have not been manufactured from natural fiber reinforced materials, because of inadequate quality of the specific material properties required for the dimensioning.
A computer based system containing all relevant information on these materials - starting from the domestic agricultural production, compounding, up to the design and calculation of components properties, plus market information and general knowledge about natural fibers and natural fiber reinforced products, has been developed. Market and price information as well as a reference database with examples of already realized applications are also available. Additional database modules will be introduced soon.
It is expected that the provision of uniform specific properties and values for the design of natural fiber reinforced components and reliable process parameters will significantly increase both acceptance and application of this material family.
