New project Biomat-LCA to help designers compare conventional plastics with bio polymers

As an extension of our activities in relation with renewable materials, we are now participating in a new project, called "Biomat-LCA". Our goal is offering designers better and earlier support when they need to rate the ecological relevance of bio polymers, especially in direct comparison with conventional plastics. Plastics from renewable resources are not automatically better than fossil plastics, many factors have to be considered for a fair comparison. Main goal of the new project is to analyse and rate these influencing factors systematically and develop strategies for material selection. M-Base concentrates on the development of specific parameters for the early phases of part design, which will not only consider mechanical properties, but processability as well.

 

Project partners

The graph shows a typical result. For a given type of load (tensile) the ecological properties can be related to the actual force. The differences between materials is due to the basic mechanical properties and the flow behaviour of the plastic resins. Such contemplation allows the designer very early in the process an overview of the ecological relevance of a material for a specific use case.
